A 2,000 ton steam-fired absorption chiller was added to City of Hope’s central plant to supplement the three existing electric centrifugal chillers and 2.3 million gallon thermal storage tank.  The addition of this chiller greatly reduced the electricity usage of the central plant, particularly during peak summer periods, which resulted in significant cost savings.  Extensive site investigation was required to ensure the large chiller and 24” piping would fit within the existing building structure.  At the time of completion, this was the largest absorption chiller installed in the western United States.
